South American Breakfast
South America is a diverse continent in terms of the people, culture, and even the languages. The South American cuisine doesn’t escape the diversity of the continent. Indeed, it is described as a mixture of African, Asian, European, and American Indian cuisines, all of which have influenced the style of cooking in South America.
The most important meal of the day for most people is breakfast. A South American Breakfast is composed of a cup of coffee with milk and bread, which can be sweet bread or “pan dulce”, or “medialunas”, small croissants which can either be sweet or plain. An alternative beverage is tea or yerba mate, a strong herbal drink.
There are other versions of the South American Breakfast beverages. In Argentina, “cafe con leche”, which is usually likened to the cafe au lait in France, is one breakfast beverage. Another is the “submarino”, which is a cup of steamed milk mixed with melted bittersweet chocolate.
Other breads or pastries which are part of the South American Breakfast include “empanadas” or stuffed sandwiches, “arepas de queso” or cheesy corn cakes, passion fruit muffins, and coconut biscuits with guava jelly.
