American Breakfast

American BreakfastAmerican breakfast has always been a confusing term. Aside from being interchangeably used with continental breakfast, it is also commonly used to refer to full breakfast. The term is also used to distinguish meals from English breakfast, Scottish breakfast, and Irish breakfast which all have the same quantity, but not components.

In Breakfast with Venus, an American breakfast is usually composed of two eggs which can be fried or poached, slices of sausages or bacon, toast with jam or sliced bread, cereal, pancakes with syrup, tea or coffee, and orange or grapefruit juice. There are variations of these, but as long as majority of the components are included, it is American.

Full breakfast, also known as all-day breakfast since it is served throughout the day, is composed of several courses, namely a starter, cereal, main course, and tea with milk, marmalade and toast. It is also called country breakfast in some parts of Midwestern United States. It is also different from the continental breakfast which is much lighter.

Most of the time, the terms American breakfast and continental breakfast are used by hotels to mean a light breakfast that consists of bread, fried breakfast meat such as bacon and ham, and coffee or tea. In Breakfast with Venus, these terms are neatly sorted out, marked by their own different components and number of courses.

American breakfast is common in most English-speaking or westernized countries. In fact, there are even fast food chains that serve such breakfast, but in a form and quantity that are typical of a fast food.
